How to Make Writing Exciting for KS1 Children
Getting ready!
I love it when a plan comes together!
The times when I literally couldn’t wait to teach what I’d planned.
I knew the children would be inspired. I could see the outcome in my mind’s eye and I was confident in how my class would achieve it.
As a result they made fantastic progress.
I believe this was for a number of reasons:
- I was inspired working with my year partner
- We had a creative approach
- We made it relevant, interesting and achievable
- We thought very carefully about how children learn
- We focused on areas for improvement
- We planned what we wanted them to achieve... and how we would get there.
It’s not always like this. Sometimes inspiration doesn’t come quickly... or at all! But when it does it’s so rewarding.
I’ve come to the conclusion that to instil in children a love for writing - whatever stage they are at - we can do a number of things to make a significant difference to their experience of it.
Get, Set! Go!
- Put learning in context to make it meaningful, relevant and appealing!
- Inspiring children will lead to confidence exploring new concepts
- Allow children to physically explore word choice and order
- Use technical terms in conversation with visual reminders alongside
- Get children interested in talking about words
- Visual clues develop confidence and the desire to have a go.
We are providing a foundation for children to support how they feel about writing and how they perceive it. This affects their approach and the outcome!
