Detailed Survey Analysis

Impact on Classroom Engagement in Literacy Learning

Teachers say classroom engagement in teaching and learning literacy is vital as it helps pupils develop both decoding and comprehension skills, as well as a love of reading.

The survey results indicate that Mighty Writer has had a positive impact on improving engagement in literacy learning among Key Stage One children.

All respondents reported a positive impact, specifically:

  • A group of 5 (12.5%) of respondents reported some impact, suggesting that they observed a slight increase in engagement levels.
  • A larger group of 11 (27.5%) respondents reported a significant impact, indicating a noticeable improvement in engagement.
  • The majority of respondents, 21 in total (or 52.5%), reported a substantial impact, suggesting a high level of improvement in engagement.
  • Finally, 3 respondents (7.5%) reported a revolutionary impact, indicating a complete turnaround in engagement levels.

impact on vocab improvement

Impact on Vocabulary Improvement

Learning the meanings of new words is an essential component of early reading development. It plays a fundamental role in the reading process and is critical to reading comprehension.

Children learn the meanings of most words indirectly, through everyday experiences with oral and written language. Other words are learned through carefully designed instruction.

In this survey, all respondents reported a positive impact in terms of vocabulary improvement in their classrooms.

  • A small group of 5 (12.5%) respondents reported some impact, suggesting a slight improvement in vocabulary.
  • A larger group of 15 (37.5%) respondents reported a significant impact, indicating a noticeable improvement in vocabulary.
  • An even larger number of respondents, 17 in total (42.5%), reported a substantial impact, suggesting a high level of vocabulary improvement.
  • Finally, 3 (7.5%) respondents reported a revolutionary impact, indicating a complete turnaround in vocabulary levels.

Impact on Sentence Recall Accuracy

According to the UK government, “Planned and spaced recall helps pupils to retain the new vocabulary they have learned.” Mighty Writer has been proven to aid sentence recall.

Regarding sentence recall accuracy, once again, all respondents reported improvements.

  • A group of 4 (10%) respondents reported only some impact, suggesting a slight improvement in sentence recall accuracy, while 90% recorded more significant results.
  • A moderate group of 10 (25%) respondents reported a significant impact, indicating a noticeable improvement in sentence recall accuracy.
  • The majority of respondents, 21 (52.5%) in total, reported a substantial impact, suggesting a high level of improvement in sentence recall accuracy.
  • Finally, 4 (10%) of respondents reported a revolutionary impact, indicating a complete turnaround in sentence recall accuracy.

impact on sentence construction

Impact on Sentence Construction

As students learn to create more complex sentences through their writing and oral language, this has a positive impact on their ability to understand what they read.

In the critical area of sentence construction, all of the respondents reported positive development.

  • A small group of 6 (15%) respondents reported some impact, suggesting a slight improvement in sentence construction.
  • A moderate group of 11 (27.5%) respondents reported a significant impact, indicating a noticeable improvement in sentence construction.
  • The largest group – made up of 19 (47.5% of respondents) -reported a substantial impact, suggesting very high levels of improvement in sentence construction.
  • Finally, 4 respondents (10%) reported a revolutionary impact, indicating a complete turnaround in sentence construction.

Impact on Ability to Record Ideas

Were students motivated to record their ideas with increasing independence? Did they become more confident discussing, planning and writing for different purposes? Were they able to edit and retell what they have written or drawn accurately?

In this area, as in all areas, all of the respondents reported progress.

  • A small group of 5 (12.5%) respondents reported some impact, suggesting a slight improvement in their ability.
  • A large group of 17 respondents (42.5%) reported a significant impact, indicating a noticeable improvement in recording their ideas.
  • Finally, the largest group of respondents, 18 in total (or 45%), reported a substantial impact, suggesting a high level of improvement in their ability to record and retell their ideas and stories.

Conclusion

The highest percentage of respondents in each category reported “Substantial improvements.”

No schools, in any category, reported zero improvement, meaning every school surveyed reported meaningful progress, in every area.

Approximately 10% of respondents in most categories found that using Mighty Writer represented a revolutionary improvement in teaching and learning.

The survey results conclusively demonstrate that Mighty Writer has had a positive impact on improving literacy among Key Stage One children in every one of the surveyed schools.

This suggests that Mighty Writer could be a transformational tool for schools aiming to improve literacy and better engage children in literacy learning.
