Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2)

How Mighty Writer Strengthens Sentence Skills and Builds Confident, Independent KS1 Writers — Supporting All Pupils, Whatever Their Starting Point

When pupils enter KS1, their writing experience can vary widely. Many children arrive already able to form letters, apply phonics and write simple sentences with confidence. Others are still developing early transcription skills or need more support to organise their ideas. Mighty Writer supports every learner by providing a clear, visual and predictable approach that strengthens both composition and transcription from the start of Year 1.

Using vocabulary tiles, punctuation symbols and conjunctions, children physically build their ideas before writing them. This allows confident writers to extend their sentences with richer vocabulary and more detail, while offering emerging writers the structure and clarity they need to understand what a complete sentence looks and sounds like. For all pupils, grammar becomes something they can see and manipulate, not just something they’re told about.

The talk → build → model → write routine helps children move smoothly from spoken language into written sentences. They learn how to expand ideas, choose precise words, organise events logically and use punctuation accurately. Mighty Writer supports the expectations of early KS1 writing by enabling pupils to rehearse ideas aloud, structure them clearly and then record them with increasing fluency.

Because ideas are built and secured before transcription begins, pupils who are still developing handwriting or phonics skills can participate with confidence. They are not overwhelmed by trying to “think and write” at the same time, which results in clearer, more accurate and more purposeful writing. Meanwhile, pupils who are ready for greater depth can use the icons to experiment with more sophisticated vocabulary and varied sentence patterns.

Mighty Writer strengthens KS1 progress by helping pupils to:
• apply early sentence skills with accuracy and growing independence
• use capital letters, full stops and early punctuation consistently
• expand ideas using richer vocabulary and simple conjunctions
• organise events clearly across sentences
• develop stamina through meaningful, structured writing tasks
• participate confidently, whatever their level of transcription fluency

By the end of KS1, children using Mighty Writer have secure foundations for both composition and transcription. They write with greater confidence, clarity and purpose — ready to meet the increasing expectations of KS2 as capable, fluent and motivated young writers.
