Education Minister Nick Gibb Sees Award-Winning Mighty Writer In Action

Education Minister Nick Gibb has seen how award-winning British teaching resource Mighty Writer is transforming children’s literacy in 28 countries.

He was alerted to Mighty Writer’s success by its inventors’ local MP Tobias Ellwood, Parliamentary Under Secretary at the MoD.

“Literacy is a vital foundation for success. We applaud and support Mighty Writer’s mission to transform our children’s lives,” said Bournemouth East MP Mr Ellwood.

“When I discovered the great work being done, I was happy to bring Mighty Writer to the attention of my parliamentary colleagues in the Department for Education.

“I believe it’s important – raising literacy standards has always been at the top of the government’s agenda,” he added.

Literacy resource Mighty Writer is helping an estimated 86,070 school children to read and write. Teachers rate it 9.7 out of 10 because it transforms the youngsters’ literacy skills overnight.

Mighty Writer uses picture, symbol and word tiles to help 4-7-year-olds learn grammar, punctuation, syntax and storytelling. They use the picture tiles to construct sentences on a soft-touch mat using hook and loop fastening.

Mighty Writer was invented two years ago by Bournemouth-based assistant head teacher and mother-of-three Emma Ralph. Since then it has been adopted by 574 schools.

Emma’s husband David Ralph showed Mighty Writer to Mr Gibb at the House of Commons.

Mr Ralph said: “It was a very positive meeting – we are extremely grateful to the minister for his time and to our local MP Tobias Ellwood for drawing his attention to Mighty Writer.

“At Mighty Writer, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to become an independent, confident and capable writer.

“Our mission is to transform the literacy skills of every child on the planet. We want to reach at least a million children by the year 2021,” he added.

Countries using Mighty Writer include the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Turkey, Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates.

Earlier this year Mighty Writer beat much larger international competitors to scoop an Education Resources Award (ERA) in a David-and-Goliath-style victory.

Mighty Writer won the Primary Resource Or Equipment (Non-ICT) trophy. It was also highly commended in the Early Years Resource Or Equipment category.
